Flushing waste down the sink or the toilet tends to be "out of sight, out of mind" for most of us, but the reality of how our waste systems work is quite different.
If you are in an urban environment and your waste is going to a sewage plant, anything you flushed is effectively diluted by the sheer volume of stormwater and other liquids being flushed by everyone else, so the issues are not as dramatic.
However if you have a septic system or an aerated septic system like Airtech in your backyard, you need to take good care of the helpful bugs that live inside it - just like you take care of your stock on the property.
What you flush really does make an impact, and if you kill off the bacteria community, the system will go badly wrong.
Phil Gatehouse talks us through some of the inner workings of an aerated septic system.
